With four decades of outstanding, pioneering music, Deuter’s place in New Age and Healing Music is firmly established. Deuter has made over a dozen releases for New Earth Records alone (favorites include “Buddha Nature,” “East of the Full Moon,” “Sun Spirit,” and “Nada Himalaya” – the latter entirely comprised of bells, singing bowls, gongs and chimes), not to mention his prior catalog of another dozen fine releases, dates back to the early 1970’s. From early classics such as “Haleakala” and “Ecstasy” to mid-period gems such as “Land of Enchantment” and “Silence is the Answer,” this German-born artist now residing in New Mexico has gracefully traversed the fine line between music for meditation and celebration, often brilliantly blending the two.
His is a multi-instrumentalist who is wonderfully adept with flute, guitar, keyboards, tamboura, santoor, bells, gongs, voice and, at times, bringing nature sounds into the mix as well. On Atmospheres, his superb new release, he uses the song of birds, crickets, the ocean and mountain stream as part of his aural tapestry. While it may seem that there is no clear definition or formal structure to this music, let me assure you that, as the listener, you will create your own forms to define the experience. Like the paintings of Monet, who inspired this CD, in their impressionistic emptiness and floral beauty, Deuter’s music reflects a sense of no beginning, no end. He understands deeply the infinite joy found in the space of that inner existence as manifest in the outer world that we see, feel and hear. – Lloyd Barde
